Play Area

Play Area

Prior to 1962 there was no official play area in the village for children. Mr. Glan Grey-Jones, a teacher and Parish Councillor at that time suggested that an application be made to the owners, the Northampton District Council to convert the neglected and furrowed field at the top of Lodge Road into a playing field for children. Its purpose was to provide the children with a safe and fun area to “let off steam”.  This was agreed and an association formed to oversee the task. When in 1995 South Northants District Council sold part of the site for development, the Parish Council was able for the nominal sum of £1.00 to buy the remainder of the land. Mr. Peter King, Chairman at that time being involved in these negotiations. The Little Houghton Playing Field Management Committee was then formed under the chairmanship of Mr. Glan Grey-Jones who also acted as the Committee’s Secretary and Treasurer. During this time and with an enthusiastic committee behind him, funds were raised for a new resilient safety surface under the play equipment to meet safety regulations. Over the years new play equipment was purchased to add to the original set of swings and a slide. On Glan’s retirement in 2006 a tree was planted in the play area in recognition of his stirling efforts over many many years.

Today the Parish Council is responsible for the running and maintaining of the play area.  We are most fortunate to have the support of the Little Houghton Friends of the Playing Field who do great work fundraising through coffee mornings and events which are enjoyed by many Parishioners.

In order to comply with the terms and conditions of insurance, a weekly inspection must be undertaken to check that the play area is safe and that the equipment is in good working order. This is carried out by volunteer parishioners who give up their time to ensure that the play area is in good condition and continues to be a valuable resource to the children of the village. You may see them trudging up the road with a clip board on a Sunday afternoon - thank you very much to all those involved, your efforts are very much appreciated! We are always keen to have more volunteers to help and training will be given - so if you would be willing to undertake an inspection, please contact our Council Playing Field Warden Liz Dutton on 01604-890732 or our Clerk Selena Jacobs on 07900577520.
