Houghton & Brafield Local History Society

Following an initial meeting held in the Red Lion (now The Four Pears), Little Houghton, about 30 years ago, it was decided to set up a History Society to meet the interests of residents of both Little and Great Houghton and Brafield.

Meetings are held in Little Houghton Parish Hall on the 4 th Wednesday of the month at 7 30pm (except in December when a social evening with food and entertainment takes place on the first Saturday). The Parish Hall is diagonally opposite the church across the cross roads behind the shop. Membership subscription is £5 per annum and admission to the monthly talks is currently, £3 for Members and £4 for visitors, to cover the cost of the hall hire , refreshments and speakers fees.

The Society has a full programme of talks, the subject matter being from both local and further afield, but always with a history theme. The programme is available on meeting nights and will shortly be available on line when the Society’s web site goes live. The subject of the forthcoming month’s talk will also be found in the Parish magazines.

Visitors are always welcome and suggestions for future talks, ideas and for getting involved in research into local history projects are always welcome.

There are currently over 80 members mostly from the Houghtons and Brafield villages although we have members from Horton, Northampton town, and even as far as Market Harborough and Croughton. That said we would be pleased to see any new members and would make them very welcome. Next year’s programme promises to be very interesting and we have strengthened links with the Cogenhoe and Whiston Local History Society to our mutual benefit.

During the summer months we make visits to sites of interest in the local area. There is so much fascinating history all around us that the difficulty is which sites to choose.

Membership is a modestly priced £2 per year and a mere £1 for each meeting you attend. This to cover any speakers costs and your tea/biscuits..
